A medicine student at MUN is on a mission to explore gaps in the system for those with mental health and addictions. Melissa Pearce is working towards a Masters degree in Science and Medicine. She’s looking for input from anyone over the age of 18 who has had any sort of experience with mental health or addiction services in rural NL.
Pearce says this survey will provide more information on what people know about community based care supports as well as how they felt about their experiences.
The title of Pearce’s thesis is “Community Care in Transition: Access and Experience of Mental Health and Addiction Services in Rural NL.” She will also be interviewing health care providers like doctors, pharmacists, social workers and those on the frontlines. Pearce says this is more than a research project after her mother in law who was diagnosed with Bipolar and lived in rural NL, lost her life.
