Eligible seniors in this province will be getting a one time direct payment of $500. Premier Tony Wakeham made the latest in a series of affordability measures announcements today. He says this will provide direct relief to over 130K seniors in NL.
Today’s announcement comes at a cost of $64M, which will be added to previously announced affordability measures. Wakeham said that brings the total to $143M. First was the acceleration of the Churchill Falls electricity discount, second the home heating rebate was doubled and third the provincial gas tax on gas and diesel will be reduced to zero
Wakeham says this is substantial and focused where support is needed most.
Payments are expected to begin before the end of 2026. Seniors with an income of up to $75,000 will receive $500. Those who earn between $75,000 and $100,000 will receive a payment based on income.
