Founded in 1935, the Corner Brook Royals won’t be lacing up this season due to an ongoing labour dispute at the Civic Centre. 91 years ago, the Royals won the all-Newfoundland senior hockey championship and the very first Herder Memorial Trophy. In a statement last night from the Central-West Senior Hockey League, they announced a one-year leave of absense for the Royals but a draft on those players will take place tomorrow for the remaining clubs Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts, Deer Lake Red Wings and Stephenville Lightning. League executive are disappointed the Royals will not be there for this season, but understands the challenging circumstances the organization was facing, with no opportunity to play its home games at the civic centre. Workers at the center were locked out by the city on October 20th.
