More people will soon have access to support that helps them live in their homes longer. The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) will start accepting applications next week for two expanded and enhanced programs. NLHC’s Home Repair Program helps low-income homeowners who need to make vital repairs. Now, the forgivable loan has been doubled to $10,000 and the lifetime maximum amount of funding homeowners can get has gone from $12,500 to $30,000. Wait times to reapply for funding has gone from seven to five years and pre-and post-inspections by NLHC are no longer required. The program is for those who make less than $42,500 a year.
Meanwhile, changes to the Home Modification Program for those who need accessibility renovations, include doubling the forgivable loan to $15,000. Recommendations from an occupational therapist for minor things like handrails and grab bars are no longer required, as well as inspections by NLHC. The income threshold for this program is $51,500
