Goldfish are an invasive species and will throw off the natural balance of the water ecosystem by overcrowding natural species, as well as eating their food and eggs or small fish.
A team from Coastal Action has been in Massey Drive since last weekend and in less than 3 minutes, were able to get 44 goldfish out of Link Pond. The problem first surfaced last summer and by October, more than 1400 goldfish were taken out of the pond. Project Coordinator Amy Russell says they use a process known as electrofishing, that uses a low current electrical field and stuns the fish without hurting them so they can be netted. She says native fish are returned to the water. Russell says the process is low risk and highly effective since certain methods like angling can only catch select fish. She says goldfish are an invasive species and will throw off the natural balance of the water ecosystem by overcrowding natural species, eating their food and eggs or small fish. Their feeding habits deplete nutrients leading to algo blooms, which are toxic.
