Crews are heading back to Massey Drive this weekend to continue work on getting gold fish out of Link Pond. Last July, a goldfish infestation prompted quick action by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. By October, they had removed over 1400 goldfish through a process known as electrofishing. Macgregor Parent is the Acting Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator. She says they tried a few different removal methods last year  which didn’t work but electrofishing was successful after only four days. She says the process uses a low current electrical field and stuns the fish without hurting them, so they can be removed with a net. Naturally occurring species are kept in water in a cooler and released back into the water.

Parent says goldfish can do a lot of damage to a natural habitat and are very aggressive, and compete with native species for food. She says it is illegal to dump tropical fish or plants and people can face fines and penalties if caught. People are being asked to stay away from the area while the work is taking place.
