Instructor Chris Joseph says they help people aged 19 and older with foundational literacy which includes the basics of reading, writing and mathematics.
Since 1986, the Murphy Centre has been helping people with literacy, primarily in the St. John’s area but there is also an office in Corner Brook. On Bayfm’s “The Plain Truth,” the guest was Chris Joseph who is a literacy instructor here. Joseph says they have an office at 17 Main Street, which is a walk in service. They have a number of partners including the Vine Place Community Centre, Corner Brook Women’s Centre and Corner Brook Public Library. Joseph says the Murphy Centre is a not-for-profit organization funded by the Department of Education and various sponsors, and the services they offer are free of charge. He says they help people aged 19 and older with foundational literacy which includes the basics of reading, writing and mathematics. Joseph says they also offer a course to help people with digital literacy. This includes cell phones, ipads, tablets, laptops covering the basics like setting up passwords and the dangers of being online. For more information email chrisjoseph@murphycentre.ca
