An initial assessment of the item carried out by airport security officials discovered the possible presence of an explosive material.
Police were called to the Deer Lake Airport Monday evening after staff noticed a suspicious bag left unattended at the terminal. RCMP Cpl Jesse O’Donaghey says members from the Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) were called in to investigate following an initial assessment of the item carried out by airport security officials, who discovered the possible presence of an explosive material.
O’Donaghey says the bag was eventually deemed safe by RCMP EDU and turned over to airport security. He says the EDU responds to approximately 90 calls for service annually, including calls involving suspicious packages, ammunition and commercial explosives, and is trained to assess, safely handle and dispose of such items.
A member of the EDU lives on the west coast and O’Donaghey says the response time was quick.
