Researchers, industry leaders, government representatives, and experts wrapped up the second Atlantic Canada Sustainable Agriculture Summit at Grenfell Campus. 90 people registered for the two-day event which ended Tuesday and topics covered climate change, crop nutrition and health, irrigation, artificial intelligence, and farm viability. Dr. Mumtaz Cheema is a Professor Boreal Ecosystems and Agricultural Science, Environment & Sustainability at Grenfell Campus. He says a big focus with agriculture in this province is becoming self-sufficient and food secure as only 10-12 percent of the food we consume is produced in NL. Cheema says to achieve a level of security, farmers are the backbone of the food production chain. He says they’ve partnered with M and M Farming on the west coast with a large-scale potato production project at Junction Brook. Summit attendees also talked about how to advance climate-smart farming through collaboration, innovation, and sustainable practices.
