While the numbers change daily, over 8K tonnes have been removed from a grounded cargo ship in Cedar Cove. That is about 76 percent of the MSC Baltic III’s total tonnage. The vessel ran aground along the south shore of the Bay of Islands after losing power in February of last year. The Canadian Coast Guard’s Bruce English says the bow section has been pulled to the beech and should be scrapped soon. He says they continue to monitor the area with shoreline, on-water and aerial pollution surveillance and monitoring, weather permitting. English says the stern section has also been moved ahead and will be salvaged next. He says all tar balls, stains, and oiled debris are cleaned and removed as found.
