Kids are settling in as the new school year is underway, but when it comes to preparing lunch, there are so many options on what to put in that bag. On Baym’s “Trash talk Thursday,” Western Regional Waste Management’s Outreach Coordinator Lynn Howse talked about lunch boxes, what goes in them, and where it goes after. One popular lunch item is yogurt and Howse says with some, the whole packaging can be recycled.
Howse says there’s a difference between bulk packets and convenience or snack packs. She says there’s also a difference in the financial and environmental sustainability. Howse says individual packs are more expensive than buying bulk and packing smaller amounts. She says there are sustainable choices like Beeswax wraps or silicone bags that can be used over and over instead of saran wrap or tinfoil which goes in the garbage.
