RCMP NL has noticed an alarming increase in the number of roadway fatalities. Cpl Jesse O’Donaghey says there was a decrease during 2024-25, and they’re hearing the same concerns from policing across the country. He says from January 1st to July 15th there have been 14 collisions involving fatalities and more since that time.
O’Donaghey says many of these collisions are still under investigation and it will take time to determine what caused them. While no trend has been identified, he says there are common contributors like speed, impairment, aggressive or distracted driving, not wearing a seatbelt and moose on roadways.
O’Donaghey says their priority is safety on our roadways. He says RCMP Traffic Services conducts daily enforcement and they work closely with partners like Highway Enforcement Division which is responsible for commercial vehicles..
O’Donaghey says motorists should take this as a stark reminder to adjust their driving habits and be very cautious on our roadways.
