What makes a mother of three living in rural NL want to become a surrogate? For Kimberly Martin of Hawkes Bay, it was something she always wanted to do. She had three miscarriages herself and met a nurse who was in the process of being a surrogate.
Martin is raising her children, ages 6, 4 and 2 and her husband is a rotational worker away from home for up to 6 weeks at a time. Her days are busy with soccer, hockey, preschool and the community, where she sits on the board of the Kids First Family Centre, all while being 32 weeks pregnant with a baby she won’t be bringing home. She says her children are aware but are too young to understand surrogacy.
Martin is completing her journey with Canadian Fertility Consulting (CFC). She says the parents are International and so deserving of a baby, and their relationship is beautiful.
Martin says there are common misconceptions about surrogacy in Canada. She feels zero connection with the baby and there is no pay for being a surrogate but there is reimbursement for medically associated costs. Martin is due to give birth in October.
