First elected in 1981 and the only female Mayor of Corner Brook until now, Priscilla Boutcher was all smiles at an event on Friday. The city dedicated a bench in her honour located at Captain Cook’s Lookout. Boutcher dedicated most of her adult life working hard to make improvements for her city and region, and the province as a whole. She says she feels honored and humbled. Boutcher spent over 24 years on council and says she enjoyed every year working for people,
Born here in 1934, Boutcher says the lookout area brings back a lot of memories for her. She says as a child she picked berries in the area, and dreamed of becoming Mayor someday to make the area special.
Last year, Boutcher received a Seniors of Distinction Award and also launched her book of memoirs titled, “ I laughed and I cried.” The cover is actually taken at Cook’s lookout. The book was edited by Pamela Gill, who was a reporter when she first met the former Mayor in 1994. She says Priscilla was a frontrunner on council, is a wonderful volunteer and inspired her ot get more involved.
Gill says the four year writing process became a Labour of Love with funny stories and some that are sad.
Priscilla Boutcher’s son David was one of 84 men on the Ocean Ranger when it sank on Valentine’s Day in 1982.
