The leader of the NDP in this province says the basic reason for poverty is a lack of money. Jim Dinn held a panel this week on food insecurity that attracted groups like the Food Producers Forum, Single Parents Association (SPANL), Bridges to Hope, and Food First NL. Dinn says they talked about how the rising cost of food and high demand on supply is being felt at the dinner table, especially for children. But he says there are changes that can be made to strengthen our food security, like making it easier for farmers.
Dinn says all taxes should be removed from all food and publicly owned grocery stores are options. He says another big topic was Food Rescue, whereby businesses send food to the dump rather than dominating to food banks. Dinn says France has a law which makes that illegal.
Dinn says farmers and producers should be able to avail of the necessary infrastructure to get more local produce into our supply. He says “The main takeaway from this panel is that income levels must change for people to truly be food secure.” Dinn says they will introduce a motion during the Fall sitting of the House of Assembly calling on government to establish an All-Party Committee to examine the grocery industry.
