Swimmer’s Itch has been reported at Trout River Pond. On Friday, Gros Morne National Park issued an advisory through social media. Swimmer’s Itch is caused by a small parasite that can burrow into the skin and is a common, naturally occurring condition in freshwater across North America.
There are no serious human health concerns, but the itching can be uncomfortable. Symptoms can also involve tingling sensations shortly after leaving the water and small red spots where the parasite has entered the skin. Treatment may include topical medication or antihistamines but first consult a medical professional.
