The next step is for the Liberal Party to find a new leader ahead of the next federal election this year.

Saying this country deserves a real choice in the next election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down as leader of the federal Liberal Party and as Prime Minister yesterday. He will remain until a new leader has been selected. Since 2015, Trudeau has been leader of the party and in 2021, was elected for his third term of Prime Minister. Trudeau made the announcement at Rideau Cottage yesterday in Ottawa and added that “if he’s having to fight internal battles, he cannot  be the best option.” Last month, Trudeau asked Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to take another job, a move which caused her to resign from cabinet. Trudeau says she has been by his side for ten years and has been an incredible political partner, but he does not share personal conversations. The next step is for the Liberal Party to find a new leader ahead of the next federal election this year.
