The city was getting a lot of complaints concerning panhandling in the downtown area and some people did not feel safe.
At a public meeting at Corner Brook city hall in late May, council approved an increase in the presence of Municipal Officers walking downtown streets during the regular 9 to 5 business hours. The city was getting a lot of complaints concerning panhandling in the downtown area and some people did not feel safe. On Bayfm, Mayor Linda Chaisson said residents are thankful for the extra police presence.
Chaisson says the RNC have also added patrols during evenings and weekends. She says if residents don’t feel safe, call the city at 637=-1666 or the RNC. There are no bylaws concerning panhandling for money or passive solicitation, which is a Charter protected form of expression in Canada.
