Marine Programs Coordinator Sydney Sullivan says the project brought together scientists, community partners and local organizations to help fill some research gaps on the west coast of NL.
There’s a new display at the Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station in Norris Point that is the result of a three year project. It was made possible under the Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk (CNFASAR) and the Atlantic Healthy Ocean Initiative (AHOI). Marine Programs Coordinator Sydney Sullivan says the project brought together scientists, community partners and local organizations to help fill some research gaps on the west coast of NL. It highlights research on benthic habitats, Acadian Redfish, zooplankton communities, marine mammals, and ghost gear reduction on the west coast.
Sullivan says this work is so important because of the incredible marine biodiversity in the area. She says the display itself was created by local artist terry Young and is made from garbage collected along the beach. Sullivan says the display interconnects science and art through an interactive digital map which showcases the research and community stories.
