Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce says this is unfair and government is withholding the funds while touting the need for daycares.
A Corner Brook based daycare provider of over 17 years raised concerns on Bayfm this week after not being paid on time. Terri Donahue was due to be paid on July 1st and what makes matters worse is that she is paid on a quarterly basis. Donahue joined Bayfm's Lenny Benoit earlier this week and said she may have to close if not paid by Friday. She did receive payment overnight but says there are a few here who have not. Meanwhile, Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce says this is unfair and government is withholding the funds while touting the need for daycares.
Teachers are another group that did not get their pay on time this month. Joyce and the opposition have brought the issue to the Minister of Education this week and sent emails. He says now, student assistants are still waiting to get their Record of Employment to be able to file for unemployment insurance and have been waiting since June. Joyce says this is a systemic issue throughout the Department of Education.
The Department of Education issued a statement saying operators “must submit quarterly statistics in order to receive payment for providing child care services.” Also, payment processing can take up to ten days and those compliant with reporting requirements will receive payment within the next business day.
