Decker says the team has been called in to natural disasters like Fiona and forest fires in central, but this is the first landslide. He says 15 members responded to the initial call.
It was nearly a week ago that a major landslide occurred on Riverside Drive, sweeping two people inside a vehicle into the cold waters of the Humber River. RNC were on the scene within minutes and rescued both. Other agencies like the RCMP, Corner Brook Fire Department, and Coast Guard also responded. Stephen Decker was there from the Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue. He says they got the call around 12:30 Tuesday morning and thought this is something new and he thought about the type of equipment they would need. Decker says the team has been called in to natural disasters like Fiona and forest fires in central, but this is the first landslide. He says 15 members responded to the initial call. Decker says he’s been with search and rescue for about 13 years and this is why people volunteer for groups like search and rescue. He says as always, potential safety issues have to be addressed first to make sure the team has the right equipment for the situation.
