Next year, Medical Radiation Technologists will be recognized as a regulated profession. Government will proclaim the Health Professions Act for medical radiation technologists on May 1st. This includes those who work in Radiological technology, Radiation therapy, Nuclear medicine technology and Magnetic resonance technology. It will prevent unqualified individuals from practicing and will be regulated by the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals. There are almost 400 medical radiation technologists employed by NL Health Services and an additional 30 x-ray health professionals who serve in combined laboratory and x-ray roles in rural parts of the province. NL Health Services will be hiring additional medical radiation technologists, who will be provided incentives including bursaries of up to $10,000 for two-year return in service commitments and signing bonuses of up to $16,000 (based on geographic location) for two-year return in service.
