President Greg Whalen says the application was sent in October, they made it through the second phase in January and found out last month they would be getting the grant.
The Toronto Blue Jays have a charitable arm known as the Jays Care Foundation and this year, more than $2.6M is going to 22 organizations in 7 provinces to enhance baseball diamonds. The Pasadena Baseball Association is the only organization in this province to receive a grant from the Jays Care Field of Dreams Program. On Bayfm, president Greg Whalen spoke about how they’ve been trying for this for several years now. He says the application was sent in October, they made it through the second phase in January and found out last month, they would be getting more than $52K.
Whalen says it was a hard secret to keep so they had a watch party attended by upwards of 200 people and when the kids heard about it, they were very excited. He says accessibility was a big requirement with the foundation and their plan. Upgrades will include benches, a pathway to the viewing area that is wheelchair accessible, a scoring pad, and new infield material because the dirt has been there since the 1960’s.
Whalen says with the upgrades, they will be able to start invitational tournaments and welcome the province to the town of Pasadena.
