Violating a fire ban brings a first offense fine of $50,000. Permits to burn grass, brush or other materials are cancelled. Some usage of gas, kerosene, alcohol, propane or charcoal-burning units is allowed but not within 3.5 metres of any trees, brush or flammable material. Coals must be totally extinguished before being safely discarded. As well, off-road vehicles must have proper screening and fire extinguishers. The fire ban in NL has been in effect since August 5th.
