Using the thermal imaging camera, members quickly marked the lost pair’s location with GPS, and after a short hike into the woods, they guided them back to safety.
Two people lost in the woods late Wednesday night near Corner Brook were safely located by volunteers with the Bay of Islands Search and Rescue….and it was the first time they used their new drone during an active SAR deployment.
Team member Stephen Decker says the RNC called them at 10:30, to help pinpoint the location of the hikers who were lost in the woods west of the Watson's Pond industrial park. He says BOISAR's drone pilots and spotters set up and launched the drone. Using the thermal imaging camera, members quickly marked the lost pair’s location with GPS, and after a short hike into the woods, they guided them back to safety.
Decker says this was the second call out in two days. He says the RNC contacted them Tuesday to help a possible group of overdue hikers in the Blow Me Down Mountains area. He says they left a trip plan with someone who contacted police when they did not return on time. Decker says on their way down the bay, the hikers’ trip plan worked and the person called to say they were okay.
