Coordinator Shawn Street says they work with these agencies and communication is everything in an emergency situation, a door that should not be there.
Communication is vital during any search and rescue mission. The Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue team now have radios which ties in with all police, ambulance, emergency, fire departments, air services and more. Coordinator Shawn Street says the new radios are a game changer since they work with these agencies and communication is everything in an emergency situation, a door that should not be there.
A 19 year old from Ontario had to be airlifted to safety this week after becoming stranded on a rock cliff near York Harbour. Street says it would have been better if they had the new radios since they couldn’t get cell phone service and there are places where even satellite phones won’t work. Street says the new radios are also encrypted, meaning scanners will now longer work.
