Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) is holding their symposium in Gander this weekend and for the President, ,it’s perfect timing to talk about recent changes to the Province’s Multi-Year Capital Works (MYCW) program. Amy Coady says only 7 of the more than 400 municipalities can now apply for funding under the program, down from 22, and it’s now stretched to four years instead of 3, meaning less money and less work getting done.
Coady says all other municipalities will apply under the Municipal Capital Works program yearly on a case by case basis, competing with 400 other communities. She says furthermore, these changes came without any consultation, told about it on Tuesday evening and members had letters Friday about the new program.
Coady says they are meeting Municipal Affairs Minister Chris Tibbs today and with representatives from municipalities over the weekend. She says they have not heard from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure yet.
