Marine Atlantic’s newest vessel finally made its first official run last night. The Ala’suinu left North Sydney at approximately 5:30 p.m. destined for Argentia. This service was originally planned for June 14th but at the beginning of the month, technicians identified an issue with the lubrication system during reviews of the vessel’s operating system. Marine Atlantic worked with the ship’s owner, Stena North Sea Ltd., to identify and correct the issue. The delay in starting the service led to additional crossings being added on the Port aux Basques run and customers were offered travel vouchers. Government and Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador issued a joint statement calling on the Federal Transportation Minister to do something about the delays. The Ala’suinu was completed in February and started a voyage across the world which also took longer than they had planned partially due to geopolitical unrest.
