During his tenure, Chretien created ten National Parks across the country.
Half the tourists who come to Newfoundland, come to visit Gros Morne National Park, nearly a quarter of a million people every year. Yesterday was a special day as Parks Canada celebrated the 50th anniversary of Gros Morne National Park. A special ceremony was held at the Discovery Centre in Woody Point. Former Prime Minister Jean Chretien was here 50 years ago to sign the deal for the park. He says he signed the deal with Joey Smallwood but had to pay the price of being screeched in. Chretien says he had a headache for a couple of days after that. The 89-year-old Chretien reflected on what Gros Morne means to him saying how rare it is in life to come back and see something 50 years later. He says when he’s alone and looks back at the luck he had in his life, he thinks of Gros Morne National Park. During his tenure, Chretien created ten National Parks across the country.
