Jordan’s Principle exists to fill gaps and meet the individual needs of First Nations kids.
Meanwhile, the office of Gudie Hutchings sent a statement in response to the story. The statement reads:
Jordan’s Principle makes sure First Nations kids get the help they need, when they need it. Schools off-reserve are a provincial responsibility. This means Newfoundland and Labrador is responsible for making sure every student has what they need to succeed – including First Nations kids in their schools. Jordan’s Principle exists to fill gaps and meet the individual needs of First Nations kids. This can include paying for educational assistants – or other health, social and educational supports – for First Nations students if the provincial government cannot meet their needs. Since 2016, your federal government has invested billions to meet the health, social and educational needs of First Nations kids through Jordan’s Principle. Indigenous Services Canada is working to process the students’ applications in due course.
