FFAW President Dwan Street says when the Federal Fisheries Minister announced the opening of redfish fishery in the Gulf, management measures  that came  down and the majority of the quota was given to the offshore dragger fleet were just a slap in the face to harvesters.

Fish harvesters gathered in Corner Brook this week and expressed their concerns about DFO’s decision on redfish and the opening of the Northern Cod Fishery. They gathered at the Barry Fish Plant in Curling on Wednesday and also included plant workers. FFAW President Dwan Street says when the Federal Fisheries Minister announced the opening of redfish fishery in the Gulf, management measures  that came  down and the majority of the quota was given to the offshore dragger fleet were just a slap in the face to harvesters. Street says 6 harvesters took it upon themselves to make the investment and make a trip out past the 164th and came in empty handed. She says shrimp is nearly gone from the Gulf and these fishers do not have access to the limited snow crab fishery.
