Elaine Huxter of Steady Brook was the first to be invested to the Order of NL during a ceremony at Government House this morning. Recognized for her contributions as a volunteer, Huxter and 7 others were honoured in the 18th investiture ceremony bringing the total number of recipients today to 159. Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, Joan Marie Aylward, said this year’s recipients have made remarkable achievements in many different areas, and she led with a quote about Elaine Huxter. She is an extraordinary volunteer and community champion who has spent 25 yrs of her life on initiatives that are supporting people in western Nl, first with the 4-h club and more recently, health care, veterans, bilingualism, arts sports, and is being recognized for her lifelong commitment to service.
Karen Brown was the Master of Ceremonies. She says “Elaine Kirkland Huxter of Steady Brook has devoted volunteer service enriching communities from Corner Brook, to the Bay of Islands and the west coast.” She is a proud veteran and member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 in Corner Brook, well known as the “bagpiper” at many events.
Brown also spoke about Huxter’s active involvement with the Rotary Club of Corner Brook, and her deep connection with Marble Mountain having been president of the ski club and the over 20 years she spent as a ski instructor. Huxter leads by example and is highly respected for her reliability and generosity. Her enduring service has left a mark on the social and cultural fabric of NL. Huxter also presents Quilts of Valour to veterans in Canada, is a past member of Canadian Parents for French and school councils, and is heavily involved with the First United Church and West Haven Camp. Her passion for arts and culture can be seen through her work with the Rotary Music Festival, TNL, Off Broadway Players, the Long Range Quilt Guild, and Writers at Woody Point.
