It was a weekend of power uncertainty in NL as crews including divers worked to manually remove ice buildup at the Bay d’Espoir Hydro facility. This prompted a power warning and a power watch as NL Hydro asked all customers to reduce consumption. At a news conference late yesterday afternoon, Hydro’s VP Operations, Rob Collett says there are 7 units at Bay d’Espoir and 6 are now back in operation with sufficient reserves on the system. They were even able to send 100 MW to Nova Scotia, during a minus 31 windchill.
Collett thanked all customers, including the people of the province, for their conservation efforts and reducing demand. He says Corner Brook Pulp and Paper provided electricity from Deer Lake Power, communities shut down ice rinks and Marble Mountain had to close because of this.
Meanwhile, Collet says the 7th unit at Bay d’Espoir should be fixed in the next week or so. He says there is still a significant amount of winter ahead of us and they will continue to monitor assets to make repairs in a timely manner.
