The Corner Brook Status of Women Council is celebrating a 50th anniversary this year. Paula Sheppard is the Executive Director. She says these organizations came about because of a Status of women report commissioned by the federal government in 1969 and released a year later. It outlined a number of areas with work to be done to improve the status of women in Canada. Sheppard says they’ve moved throughout the city over the years until raising enough money to buy a place. She says growing from volunteers to having a full time coordinator will be highlighted during a celebration leading up to November 30th at the Glynmill Inn. The first meeting of the Corner Brook Status of Women Council was held in the former S.D.Cook school.
