Always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device and check safety gear before heading out.
While people on the northeast coast, east of the Avalon and Labrador headed out on Canada Day yesterday to catch a few cod for the table, the season won’t start in this area until tomorrow. It is restricted to three days a week here, but on the east coast it’s been increased to seven days a week and it has everything to do with cod stocks. Meanwhile, with the extra traffic expected on the water, the RNC is reminding boaters of safety.
With an extended recreational groundfish fishery underway, police are expecting a larger than normal number of people taking part in the food fishery. Whether a seasoned fisher, or a first-timer, the RNC asks that all boaters be ready for cold water and changing weather. Always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device and check safety gear before heading out. Carry reliable communication, such as a fully charged mobile phone or VHF radio. Keep your speeds reasonable and be respectful of other boaters. Always, tell a family member or friend your plans and when you expect to return. As well, impaired boating is a criminal offence and can have consequences far beyond the loss of boating privileges. Combined with sun, wind and waves, the effects of alcohol and drugs on the water can be deadly.
The RCMP also wants everyone to be safe as they head out on the water. Cpl Jesse O’Donaghey says people need to be serious about safety. He says police are expecting to see more activity on the water, especially now with the warmer weather. O’Donaghey says always leave details of a trip plan with family or friends so they know when to expect you back.
