People wanting to know more about the Bay du Nord application have a chance to attend a public information session in Corner Brook next week. Registration is open for the Canada–Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator (C-NLOER) in-person sessions. The estimated $14B deepwater offshore oil development is in an area about 500 kms east of St.John’s and is co-owned by Equinor and BP. At full operation, it is expected to produce between 160,000-175,00 barrels per day.
Dr. Robert Greenwood is an independent, third-party public engagement facilitator and will lead the sessions, including the upcoming one in Corner Brook Tuesday evening at the Glynmill Inn. He says there will be a presentation on the project and people can ask questions and share their views with both the project proponent and the regulator there. So far, there have been two virtual sessions as well as in-person and Greenwood says a lot of business owners and those interested in economic development have attended so far.
People can go to cnloer.ca to register, make a submission or ask a question. The public review process will wrap up on August 20th with final decision on investment by the proponent, ie: oil companies in 2027.
