Immigration Minister Sarah Stoodley says that’s 3,050 down to 1,525 annually for the next three years.
This province’s Immigration Minister was shocked last week to receive a letter from federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller confirming Ottawa is slashing the number of immigration spaces in every province by half. Sarah Stoodley says that’s 3,050 down to 1,525 annually for the next three years. As well, 75 percent of these spaces will have to be filled by temporary workers currently in Canada. Stoodley says through immigration programs last year NL recruited 737 healthcare workers, including 257 nurses, 65 Early Childhood Educators, and 154 skilled tradespeople. She says the department is planning a series of briefings this week with businesses to discuss what this means for recruiting workers. Stoodley says ninety percent of nurses who did immigrate here work in rural areas.
