Corner Brook Status of Women Research and Action Coordinator Destiny Hopkins says a Stats Canada report from a couple of years ago highlighted youth 15 plus are spending more than twenty hours a week on their phones and that number is increasing.

Technology plays a big part in shaping our lives and on Bayfm’s “Rising Voices,” host Sarah Parsons dives into how tech shapes the lives of young people. The guest was Destiny Hopkins, a Research and Action Coordinator with the Corner Brook Status of Women. She is working on a project called, “Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence.” Hopkins says there are positive ways technology can help but sometimes the way it’s designed and laid out for people to use can make it damaging. She says Image-based abuse involves the sharing of nude photos but AI can take any photo, change it, and make it damaging. Meanwhile, Hopkins says social media can be “well-rounding” for youth as an educational tool or making connections.

Hopkins says a Stats Canada report from a couple of years ago highlighted youth 15 plus are spending more than twenty hours a week on their phones and that number is increasing.
