Each time a news link appears in a Google search, the bill would force Google to compensate the companies, but the amount of compensation is unknown. Meta, who owns Facebook, has started blocking news agencies as a result.
It appears as though BayFM will be blocked from Facebook in Canada. It’s not because of our posts but instead, a new bill called C-18, known as the Online News Act. It’s a case of Big Tech, like Meta and Google, versus Canadian news. The federal government slashed advertising on Facebook and Instagram earlier this month, insisting these companies pay for using Canadian news on their platforms. Each time a news link appears in a Google search, the bill would force Google to compensate the companies, but the amount of compensation is unknown. Meta, which owns Facebook, has started blocking news agencies as a result. The bill will take effect in about 6 months time.
