While Premier Tony Wakeham announced a cut to electricity and doubled heating rebate yesterday, the opposition says this falls short of what people need. Leader John Hogan spoke to reporters after the announcement saying this is a small percentage of more than $500 million in unexpected additional revenue from high oil prices and the electricity rebate will not take effect until January. He says this announcement doesn’t go far enough to address the rising costs of living. Hogan says families, seniors, and working people need immediate action to help with the cost of groceries, gas, electricity, and home heating. He says most are living paycheck to paycheck and it’s getting colder now. He says their plan to roll out affordability measures in phases, with more announcements promised in the coming days and weeks, is unacceptable and purely political in nature.
