A Corner Brook business owner has lost faith in justice. Doug Payne is the victim of a serious knife attack that happened last month at his store “Downtown Entertainment” in the Valley Mall. A short but intense police search for the suspect led to the arrest of 32-year-old Gregg Musakanda. Payne attended a bail hearing last week and Musakanda was released on $500 bail. Payne says there were five attempts at bail hearings which kept getting put ahead and a DUI or poaching of a moose would have been much more.
Payne says he suffered five deep stab wounds all over his body and thinks he lost about 5 pints of blood during the ordeal. His blood pressure dropped to 80 over 50 and his heart beats per minute dropped dangerously to 76.
Musakanda has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, disguise with intent, and break and enter. Payne says he speaks with police and victim services, but says the court system is letting everyone down.
Payne says when this is done he feels there will be some sort of penalty but he’s not sure what it will be. He says police want the accused to be charged with attempted murder.
Musakanda is due back in court on November 17th. Meanwhile, Downtown Entertainment is into their 14th year of business. Payne says they are planning an anniversary event for later this month.
