At Monday’s public meeting Corner Brook city council approved contracts for the supply of winter sand as well as snow clearing from small roads and parking lots at a total of almost $356K. Two bids were received for sand supply and Humber Arm Contracting was awarded a contract for nearly $53K. Assistant Director of Engineering, Andrew Miller says that’s an increase of 3-5 percent over last year’s cost but it is expected with the increase in the price of fuel.
Miller says the city bought a set of weigh scales last year which was installed and when a truck leaves the yard with salt or sand it’s tracked and there have been improvements with consumption numbers.
Meanwhile, Etheridge’s Maintenance got the contracts for small road’s snow clearing at more than $112K a year and parking lots snow clearing at over $191K. Miller says this year, the city is going with a three year contract for both and that allows a firm price for the next few years. Miller mentioned the price this year is substantially higher than last year’s quote of about $32K but if the work was done in-house with city equipment, the cost is comparable with bids received.
