The Humberwood Treatment Centre is getting a $3.75 M expansion and work will start this fall. Design and planning for the first phase is done for a multi-year project totalling $8.25M investment. This morning at the Centre on Boone’s Road, Health and Community Services Minister Joedy Wall spoke about how services will provide same‑day access to withdrawal management and support a smoother transition to in-patient services. He says establishing community-based detox services on the West coast will increase access to addictions recovery services for residents.
Wall says this is part of a multi-year $8.25M investment to be completed in two phases and mean the addition of ten more beds. It will increase access to community-based detox services by establishing four dedicated short-stay beds for individuals requiring same-day or next-day admission in the first phase. As well, six additional beds will be added to increase in-patient capacity at the Humberwood Treatment Centre in the second phase. Wall says the new program will have the capacity to help up to 200 people each year.
Melissa Roberts is the Director of Mental Health and Addictions with NL Health Services-western zone. She says Humberwood is one of two provincial addiction treatment centres and there is one provincial referral process
Humberwood is currently a 12-bed, 28-day in-patient treatment facility and when the expansion is complete, there will be 18 inpatient treatment beds and four community-based detox beds.
