Wildlife officers are keeping a close eye on black bear activity in the town of Pasadena and residents are urged to do their part to avoid attracting them. Last week, the town issued an advisory after one got into garbage near the top of Pine Avenue. Although it’s not uncommon, Mayor Darren Gardner says bear activity appears to be happening more often. He says residents should store and dispose of garbage properly. Do not place garbage outside until the designated collection day and remove fallen fruit that may be collecting on the ground.
Gardner says it’s mainly happening in one area of town from Glendale to Pine Avenue. He says residents are asked to be vigilant and keep anything edible out of “paws” reach.
There are an estimated 6,000 to 10,000 black bears on the Island of Newfoundland.
