    The Great Atlantic Salt Project is being developed by Atlas Salt Inc. with the potential to produce upwards of  4.0 million tonnes of road de-icing salt annually.

    The ground has broken at the site of a major underground salt mine in St. George’s. The Great Atlantic Salt Project is being developed by Atlas Salt Inc. with the potential to produce upwards of  4.0 million tonnes of road de-icing salt annually. According to the company’s newsletter “The Rock Salt Press,”  the groundbreaking  marks the move from the exploration and permitting phase to early construction and development. The next step is capturing long-term employment, economic growth, and environmentally sustainable mining operations. Commercial production is slated for 2029 and the mine has an expected lifespan of up to 50 years.
