The Candlelighters also puts off a camp for kids with cancer, called Camp Delight. Heppleston says they held a fundraiser in St. John’s this past weekend, which featured a Corner brook package with about $2,000.
The Candlelighters Association is based in St. John’s but does a lot of work throughout the province. It’s a volunteer charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of directors, dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with cancer and their families since 1982. Director Paul Heppleston joined the board in March but has had a connection since 2013.
“That’s when our older daughter was diagnosed with cancer,” he says. “We became close with the Candlelighters. They have a cabinet full of food on the medicine ward at the Janeway for family members who don’t want to rik bringing a bug into the rooms.”
Heppleston says it helps so much to be able to share experiences. “When I talk to a father I know who is going through the same thing, I say don’t let your highs get too high or your lows get too low,” he says “That really resonates.”
