The Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI) and partners have finished the year by retrieving 50,000 pounds of lost fishing gear. Areas spanning from Burgeo to Port aux Basques, and Trout River to Cow Head in the Gros Morne area were checked using side scan sonar technology. CCFI Managing Director Keith Hutchings says they found 8 reusable lost lobster pots that will be returned to the owner, among other things like rope, nets, material often stored in fishing sheds along shorelines that were washed away during the hurricane. Hutchings says they also retrieved gear from shorelines and engaged harvesters in both areas to recycle end of life fishing gear. He says this is a more proactive aspect where unwanted gear could be collected and recycled. Hutchings says they’re still collecting data and the project should finish at the end of March.
