The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) issued over 270 tickets and charged multiple impaired drivers during the Thanksgiving long weekend. ‘Operation Impact’ took place October 11-14 and is a national public awareness campaign to help prevent collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on our roads. Through checkpoints and speed enforcement, officers increased enforcement as they worked to detect impaired driving, as well as aggressive driving, distracted driving, and driving without a seat belt. Tickets issued were primarily for speeding. Meanwhile, RCMP Traffic West joined other jurisdictions for Operation Impact and arrested multiple impaired drivers and ticketed a number of motorists for various traffic offences. A total of five drivers were arrested for impaired driving by alcohol and drugs. One motorist received a roadside licence suspension for having a blood alcohol concentration that was above the provincial limit but below the criminal threshold. During the long weekend, 15 checkpoints were conducted in various areas of the province with more than 1600 vehicles checked.
