Opposition says NL not meeting its' target for child care spaces

    The latest childcare report indicates only 1345 new childcare spaces have been created in the province, which is lagging far behind its’ target of 5895 spaces.

    According to the opposition, the latest childcare report indicates only 1345 new childcare spaces have been created in the province. Newfoundland and Labrador is lagging far behind its’ target of 5895 spaces. Shadow to the Education Minister, Paul Dinn, says “This week, the Minister was singing the praises of 8600 children in the province availing of $10 a day childcare but nothing of the new spaces created nor the children with nowhere to go.A recent study by the Jimmy Pratt Foundation, and according to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, as many as 72% of young children in Newfoundland and Labrador live in childcare deserts, defined as a postal code where there are more than three children per licensed childcare space, the second highest proportion in Canada.
