Whether you’re riding a bike or taking a hike, going uphill is usually a bigger challenge than coming down…..and for Ernest Green, his trek up the Man in the Mountain trail east of Corner Brook last week was mostly uneventful. He followed markers but got lost and into the woods. Green made it back to the pond and decided to stay put and called 9-1-1 for help, eventually ending up on the line with Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue.
He says BOISAR member Krista Tarbett kept him calm and stayed on the phone with him. Then, he met a man named Sam from Ontario, an avid hiker who helped him meet with the search team.
Meanwhile, Tarbett has been with BOISAR for 5 years now and was the Search Manager on this deployment and says luckily he had cell phone service. A dozen members of the team answered the call to help and the lost hiker used his cellphone and GPS to relay his exact location. Tarbett says the best advice for anyone in the backcountry is “don’t travel alone” but a trip plan is always important. She says by telling someone when to expect you back and you don’t, they can make the call for help. The team was back in the shop ready for the next call by 3:30 p.m.
